7 mental shifts that allowed me to create and sell my dance studio

By the time I was 21 years old, I had created, grown, and sold my first dance studio.

Sometimes people will ask me how I did it. Is there a trick? Am I particularly smart? Did I have some advantages that other people don’t have?

I can tell you that the one advantage that I do have is that I saw the mental shifts, the mindsets, that I needed to make in order to run a successful dance studio and do it quickly.

Below are my 7 Mental Shifts that have helped me create and sell three businesses.

1. Resilience – I have seen countless studio owners curl up in a ball when an angry parent comes to them with a problem. Many of them will lose three or four weeks trying to get over the event. My number one rule is here for a reason: Pick yourself up and get back into your tap shoes, right away. The parent might be having a bad day and they wanted to take it out on you. Don’t slow down and don’t stop. Just keep moving. Success comes from learning from these events and getting right back in the dance.

2. Persistence – “If at first you don’t succeed…” This is a vital principle for your success. You must keep trying. You shouldn’t simply try to do the same thing again. After all, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Study your challenge from a new perspective and try again. There is nothing you can’t conquer with resilience and adaptability.

3. Self-belief – You need to know that you are able to do this. You know how I know that you can do it? Because I did. I am not extraordinary. I know that I can succeed, so I do. Believe in yourself! You can do anything you choose to. There are millions of stories about people who have overcome difficulties much worse than yours. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you too.

4. Think big Don’t just get by. Think big. If you want to own a mountain, don’t settle for a molehill. You can own a mountain if you set your sights on it. Thinking big is the first step to huge successes. Every successful person will tell you that their success started with a nearly impossible vision.

5. Don’t look sideways – Focus on your studio, not everyone else’s. So often I will go to a dance studio to talk to the owners and they will spend hours telling me what everyone around them is doing, in detail. When I ask them about their business, they seem clueless. It doesn’t matter what other people are doing. Their success does not mean your failure. And their failure should not be something you cherish. Pay attention to your own studio. Know your business.

6. Trust – Many of the keys to success rely upon trust: trust in yourself, trust in your vision, trust in others to help you, trust in the power of intention to help you succeed. Trust is a vital part of a healthy business attitude. There are successful people who don’t trust, but they tend to be paranoid, overstressed, and waste a great deal of their time looking for bad things. Trust is the key to enjoying what you build, whether it is a small local studio or a national studio chain.

7. Surround yourself with the right people – Only surround yourself with people who appreciate your vision and will support your success. People who lift you up will make your success more assured. If the people around are constantly telling you how you will fail, then they will become a part of your self-fulfilling prophecy. Get rid of the negative influences in your life.
